Twins, Triplets and More in Reading are all set for special 30th Anniversary Party
Twins, Triplets and More in Reading are all set for special 30th Anniversary Party
Local Reading and district twins plus club is planning to hold a special birthday party, which is open to all multiple birth families and their friends, on Sunday 6th July at Beale Park to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Twins and Multiple Births Association (Tamba). Tamba is the national charity for multiple birth families and has a network of affiliated clubs, of which Reading and district twins plus club is one, across the whole UK.
Mum of twins and an original founder of Tamba, Judi Linney, said, ”30 years ago, there was no advice or information for families with twins, triplets or more and I and a group of likeminded people decided that we needed a national body to undertake research, produce specific advice and fight for the services and products that met our unique needs.
“Much has been achieved but Tamba and Reading and district twins plus club are needed now more than ever as the number of multiple birth pregnancies in the UK continues to rise.”
Local Twins Club representative Lisa Kelly added, “Raising more than one at a time can be hard work so this party is a great chance for multiple birth families and their friends to come together and celebrate the good things in life.
“There will be fun and games for everyone and you can be sure of getting a slice of birthday cake. Our club is open to all so if you have never been before then this is great chance to come see what we get up to and you can be sure of meeting other families who know what raising multiples is like!”
The club meets every Friday from 10 – 12 at Waterloo Meadows in Reading. However, over the summer they are meeting temporarily at Whitley Community Church, 29 Dawlish Road, Reading from 9.30 – 11.15 whilst Waterloo Meadows is being refurbished. It costs £10 for a family to become a member for a year, and it costs £1.50 every Friday.

Success for The Beale Park Thames Boat Show 2008
Organisers of the Beale Park Thames Boat Show are celebrating another successful year as the three day event attracted 7,000 visitors and saw an eight per cent increase in exhibitors numbers - despite the Red Board restrictions placed on the River Thames, due to strong streams caused by the heavy rainfall earlier in the week.
Following the downpour, the event enjoyed glorious sunshine, giving visitors the perfect opportunity to relax and soak up the atmosphere as a variety of vessels including wooden boats, canoes and coracles, sailing, steam and electric boats, solar and pedal powered craft took to the lake.
Show Director and Beale Park Chairman of the Trustees, Richard Howard, said “We were delighted to see that so many of our exhibitors and visitors made it to the show as the traffic on the River Thames was virtually at a standstill all weekend.”
Richard continued “It did affect the show to a certain degree as some people were simply unable to navigate and we were not in a position to offer the free boat trips for safety reasons but, nevertheless, with the assistance of our exhibitors and The Thames Boating Trades Association, who run the trips on our behalf, we were able to offer visitors trips on the lake, which was a great success.”
The weekend’s entertainment included a guest appearance by the actor, Michael
Elwyn, known for his role as Sir Edward, Marian's Father in the BBC's hit TV series, Robin Hood. Michael’s performance of “The Revenge”, by Tennyson, was well received by the crowd and a first for the show.
Other attractions included displays on the lake by various boating organisations, a Newfoundland Dogs display, Irish and Morris Dancers, cookery demonstrations and several live bands.
The Classic Car display also grew this year, attracting several newcomers including a vintage Rolls Royce and the Warner Brothers’ promotional car from ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’.
Supported by the Environment Agency, the show is designed to introduce and encourage people to take to the water with free boat trips and family canoeing. In addition to this there is the opportunity to “try a boat” through exhibitors, and visitors are offered the chance to win a family cruising holiday worth £1,500 courtesy of Crown Blue Line, a member of the European boating holiday specialist Le Boat group. This year’s winner is Mr Andrew Swain of Reading.
The Beale Park Thames Boat Show is also supported by Wave Seven Marine Ltd, a market leader in the provision of mooring systems, who are part sponsors of the show’s pontoons with the installation of their EZ-Dock Pontoon System, and by The Waterways Trust who donated £5,000 to assist in the creation of a landing stage and the upgrade of the bridge to provide easier access between the Park’s lake and the River Thames.
Next year’s event will be held on 5th, 6th and 7th June 2009.

Wave Seven Marine Ltd
Wave Seven Marine Ltd, suppliers of EZ-Dock pontoon systems is proud to be sponsoring the pontoons for the Beale Park Thames Boat Show. This boat show is the most hands-on event in the country where visitors get a chance to touch, feel and even try a boat – there’s a lot of “real” boating enthusiasm here. So why is EZ-Dock involved?
There’s an awful lot of “tradition” in boating in Britain, we like to feel that our sailing, canoeing and general boating takes us back to the days when Britain depended a great deal on its seafarers. We like our boats to be “real”, well built and sturdy and why shouldn’t we expect the same from the way we gain access to our boats. In the world of boats we have come to expect the use of modern materials for greater ease of use, for practicality and a long life – so why are so many pontoons still made of wood (that rots and splinters) or concrete (that’s looks quite awful)or steel (that rusts)? When polyethylene pontoons first came on the market they were pretty ugly, not very stable and generally not very comfortable to use. EZ-Dock was designed by two old guys in the U.S.A. who just wanted to get more enjoyment out of their boating and fishing. They wanted their pontoons stable, non-slip, long wearing and simple to install. They used bits of cardboard to design the first multi-compartmented dock-section. They also realised that all these huge chunks of steel and concrete used for pontoons are not really necessary in many cases so they kept their design as neat as possible.
Now EZ-Dock is a multi-million dollar business supplying pontoons all over the world and in use for a whole range of purposes – from local sailing clubs to military ports. We hope that visitors to Beale Park will welcome the great stability of EZ-Dock as they visit all of the show – and if they want to visit our “floating office” near the slipway they can enjoy a show discount on any order for pontoons taken during the show.
